TMA: Residents mark one week celebration of Prez Mills’ death

Residents of the industrial city in Tema yesterday observed the one week celebration of the demise of President John Atta Mills in grief as many, even at work places, were seen in mourning apparels. 

People dressed in black and red and many with red scarf around their necks and or red bands on their arms. Vehicles and building were also draped in the red and black colours.  

At drinking pubs and other public places, people were seen gathered observing the occasion.

A huge portrait of the former President was displayed at the Tema Metropolitan Assembly office with several people trooping there to pay their respects.

Some people took the day off to observe the day. "I have to commemorate the day. I did not go to work. I just could not," Akuffo, a mechanic told the Ghana News Agency.


"A red band, which was initially sold for only one cedi was later going for three cedis and even with that we cannot find any to buy" a lady said.

Mr Foster Asante, Communications Director, Tema West for Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, described the former President’s passing as devastating for the whole country.

"He was described in many derogatory ways by all manner of people but still kept his dignity without ever sounding abusive or threatened."

Mr Asante expressed the hope that Ghanaians would always know when to rise above party politics and stand together as one nation, saying "for the sake of the nation’s progress I hope this unity continues”.

Former President John Evans Atta Mills passed away in the afternoon of Tuesday July 24th 2012 after a sudden illness.
