AKATSI:Akatsi North District inaugurated

@ ceremony

The New Akatsi North District Assembly, curved from the Akatsi District has been inaugurated at a well attended ceremony held at Ave Dakpa.

Mrs. Azumah-Mensah who delivered the president’s speech said government would continue to pursue programmes that would further strengthen the decentralization process in-line with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto for a better Ghana and called for the support of the chiefs in the respective districts.

She said, as a strategy for enhancing the work of the District assemblies and making it easier for the DCEs, Presiding Members, assembly members and other local government practitioners to identify and internalize the framework for local governance in Ghana, the government has decided to consolidate all the major laws on local government and decentralization so that in one legislation, a local government practitioner can have access to all the primary source materials o0n the subject.

She wounded why the same criteria and procedures that were used to create municipalities and districts in 2003 and 2007 without any opposition when they were in opposition, are today being faulted every step of the way, so much so that parliamentary constituencies that logically follow from the creation of district are today even being contested in court.

Chief Executive of the Akatsi South District, where the new Akatsi North was curved from, Peter Kwasi Nortsu-Kotoe urged the new district to work assiduously to build on the development success achieved in the area in the past three-and a half years.

He stated that the area recorded massive projects including mass electrification, removal of schools under trees, increase in capitation grant and increase in the number of schools benefiting from the school feeding programme among others.

“If within three and a half years, the development of this area is like this, one could imagine the rate of development of Akatsi North District after today’s programme.

He called on all and sundry to put their hands on the wheel of development to ensure the new district witnessed the accelerated development for which the district is created.

To achieve this, Mr. Nortsu-Kotoe said everyone must consider him/herself as a partner in development and honour their tax obligations, conform to rules and regulations, be tolerant and give room for divergent views. He also reminded them that the new district is going to deprive a lot of people of their rights to certain facilities and properties. This he noted are some of the prices one has to pay for the new districts.

He advised business minded individuals to take advantage of the situation to open up new businesses to open up the area for brisk economic activities.

He announced that the new district is taking off with two refuse trucks for sanitation while other equipment for road and others will follow shortly to enable the assembly to start on a good note.
