ATIWA:Disaster reduction committee inaugurated

The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) in collaboration with the Atiwa District Assembly in the Eastern Region later this month inaugurated a committee for Disaster risk reduction Adaptation.
The setting up of this committee was necessitated when the UN/International Decade for Natural disaster Reduction and the UN/International Strategy for Disaster reduction called for interdisciplinary involvement to coordinate, guide and implement disaster risk reduction with development agents and in close coordination with disaster management institution.
The main motive of this committee is to take charge of Planning and Drawing a District Disaster Preparedness Plan to curtail the effects of natural disasters.
For their part, the District Coordinator, Mr. kofi Danso was overwhelmed by the occurrences of natural disasters in the district hence called for a collaborated effort to curb the menace.
The District Chief Executive, Honourable Emmanuel Attah Twum, in his speech, said he was glad the District Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction and Climate Change Adaptation was being inaugurated. He recalled how the Birim River overflowed and destroyed properties last year.
He said the frequent occurrence of disasters moved the present Government to bring disaster management to the doorsteps of the people.
Honorable Emmanuel Attah Twum called on the various institutions to use their varied expertise to help prevent and manage disasters in the Atiwa District.
