Dr. Kwaku Senaya, Municipal Director of Health in the New Juaben Municipality has disclosed that 8 confirmed cholera cases have been registered in the municipality.
Addressing Assembly Members at the first ordinary meeting of the sixth assembly in Koforidua, Dr Senaya noted that though the Municipal Health Directorate instituted a number of measures when the disease broke out in Accra that could not entirely prevented the cases in the municipality as a lot of people travel to and from Accra on daily basis. On 10th May, they recorded the first case followed by the other cases which have all been dealt with without any death being recorded.
This not with standing, Dr Senaya advised assembly members to get involved in intensifying education as the situations that promote the spread of the disease remain the same. He expressed concern about waste disposal sites, toilet facilities, water supply systems, food sale out lets, adding that these areas must be well catered for as any wrong move means disaster.
As a long term measure, he suggested that public wells should be disinfected quarterly while calling for certification of places where foods are prepared for sale.
He called on the public to report any sign of cholera to any health institution for early treatment noting that government has made enough drugs available for treatment and at no cost. Dominic Shirimori/Ghanadistricts.com
