The Minister for Water Resources Works and Housing Alban Sumana Bagbin has directed Zoom lion a refuse management company to halt the dumping of refuse at an unapproved damping site at Edina Esaman near Elmina in the Komenda Edina Eguafo Abream (KEEA) District.
The directive follows persistent complaints from residents of the vicinity about the health hazards posed to them by the offensive stench from the refuse dump that fouls the air forcing them to breathe in an unwholesome air ever since the dumping started.
The situation according to reports has left residents mostly children with strange rushes all over their bodies sustained from bites from inserts believed to have emerged from the dump site.
Residents of Edina Esaman including chiefs and opinion leaders raised red flags about the using the site as a dumping site given its proximity to the area. But the refuse management company ignored the plight of the residents and pursued their plans much to the detriment of human health.
The district assembly has however admitted being aware of the health threat posed to residence of Edina Esaman and has promise it will soon put in place mechanisms to refurbish the facility to eliminate the danger it poses to residents.
The governing body of the area also pledged to allocate to them an alternative dumping site which will be far from the vicinity without any health risk to the community and its environs.
