A dormitory block of the Wa School for the Blind in the Upper West Region has been razed down by fire.
According to the House Master of the School, the entire block has been badly damaged.
The fire is reported to have started around 7:25 pm on Tuesday June 14, when the students were at preps.
Mr Alfred Asumpion, told Citi News personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service could not extinguish the fire because they had no working fire tender to fight it.
This incident comes barely two days after President Mills presented to the Ghana National Fire Service, 54 fire tenders and other fire fighting equipment.
Mr. Asumpion told Citi News the Minister for Education, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu and other government officials were all present looking on helplessly as the building was being razed down.
The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. But no injury was reported since the students were not in their rooms.
Ghana could have witnessed a major disaster if the blind children were in the dormitory block during the outbreak.
Speaking to Citi News, the Minister of Education, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrisu said she was traumatized by the fire outbreak.
She aid the situation could have been controlled if fire tenders were available immediately.
“Wa did not have a working fire tender, the engine was out of order so the fire has razed the dormitory down. I am very traumatized by this” she said sadly.
