JASIKAN : Assembly Supports Disabled with ?41m

The Jasikan District Assembly has spent a total of ¢41 million in support of activities of the physically challenged in the district.

The Jasikan District Chief Executive, Mr Solomon Kwame Donkor, disclosed this at a two-day workshop organized by the Volta Physically Challenged and Independent Group (VOLPHIG) for women in the District.

The workshop, which had support from the United States Embassy, was to empower the women on their basic human rights and also to educate them on the provisions in the Disability Act 2006.

Mr Donkor said the Assembly’s gesture was to emphasize government’s commitment to issues affecting the physically challenged in the country.

He said the Assembly was prepared to offer any assistance towards the socio-economic development of people living with disabilities in the District and called on the Department of Social Welfare to identify and liase with recognized associations to forward proposals to them for consideration.

The DCE called on people living with disabilities to eschew self-pity and develop self-confidence for their economic empowerment.

Madam Florence Dzide, District Social Welfare Officer, who lectured participants on ACT 715 of Persons with Disability 2006, said there were 230 registered disabled persons in the District and urged stakeholders to come to their aid.

Mr Francis Ansong, General Secretary of VOLPHIG expressed joy about the success of the workshop and appealed to the Democracy and Human Rights Section of the US Embassy for further supports to enable them to reach out to others in parts of the region where rights abuses remained prevalent.
