The Nadowli District was created in 1988 with Nadowli as the district capital. The district lies at the centre of the Upper west Region.
It is bordered by the Republic of Burkina Faso to the west, by the Jirapa/Lambussie District to the north and by the Sissala District to the east. To the south, it is bounded by the Wa District out of which it was carved.
