JIRAPA : U/W Women Groups Schooled on GPRS

Women’s groups in Upper West region are being sensitised to access productive resources and development opportunities within the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS) through workshops at the district level.

The groups in Lawra, Sissala East and Jirapa/Lambussie districts of the region have already had their workshops organized by SEND Foundation for West Africa in collaboration with the German Development Agency (DED), Friends of Rural Development, Ghana (FoRD-G) and the district assemblies.

At one of such workshops in Jirapa, Mr Lawrence Dakurah, the Regional Director of the Town and Country Planning Department, told the women not to see the lack of money as the only constituent of poverty.

Even with the abundance of money, he said, the absence of facilities like schools, clinics and good drinking water constituted major stumbling blocks to human development. He said GPRS was a major policy framework of government to stimulate economic growth through wealth creation for accelerated poverty reduction.

Mr Justin Dakorah, the Jirapa/Lambussie District Chief Executive, said the government crafted the GPRS for the benefit of all Ghanaians and it was unfortunate for anybody to give any political colour to it.
