East Mamprusi, one of the  20 districts in the Northern Region, has its capital at Gambaga.  It is located in the North-Eastern part of the Region.  To the North, it shares boundaries with the Upper East Region and to the East is the Republic of Togo.  It is bordered to the west by the Gusheigu District and the Saboba/Chereponi District.  

The district lies in the Tropical Continental Belt Western Margin.  The district lies in the interior woodland savannah belt and its common grass vegetation with trees such as baobab, acacia and sheanuts trees.  Grasses grow in tussocks and can reach heights of three metres or more.
