water and sanitation

The level of potable water supply in the district is slightly higher than the national figure of 57.0%. East Akim District currently has coverage of above 65% for communities with population below 5000. The water facilities in the district include Boreholes, Hand dug wells and Stand pipes.

In all, 109 Boreholes, 17 Hand dug wells, and 49 Stand pipes are available. Among these numbers, 6 Boreholes, 2 Hand dug wells and 3 stand pipes are not functioning. Water facilities in the district were provided under the sponsorship of DANIDA, JICA ADRA, ORAP, AMER and the East Akim District Assembly.

Sanitation on the other hand remains a major development problem in the district. There are only 581 sanitary facilities (VIPs) available for a population of 110,964.

Programmes for the Vulnerable and Excluded
For some time now, programmes for vulnerable has been included in the district. Especially in the GPRS 1, prominence has been given to the design, establishment and implementation of systems that provide resources to ameliorate conditions of extreme poverty and social deprivation.

Within the District, there exist systems that take care of some of the needs of the vulnerable and excluded. One of such systems worth mentioning is the Asiakwa SOS centre/home which has provided avenues for caring and training of orphans. Another is the Kibi School for the Deaf etc. In spite of this, a lot requires to be done with respect to the coverage of the poorest groups, the Aged, people living with HIV/AIDS, people orphaned by HIV/AIDS, disabled, visual impaired and inimical customs and traditions.
