The West Gonja District is one of the 26 districts in the Northern Region, with its administrative capital at Damango. About 30% of the district’s land represents forest reserves and Mole National Park. The district shares common boundaries with Sawla-Tuna-Kalba district on the west, Wa East and West Mamprusi on the north. The district also shares boundaries with North Gonja to the East and Central Gonja on the south. The district is endowed with natural game resources and many tourist sites.
The Paramount chief of Gonjaland Traditional area, Yagbonwura Sulemana Tuntunmba Bore Essa (1,) has stressed that peace and unity underpins the socio- economic and infrastructural development, for that matter there is the need as citizens of northern Ghana to promote the inter and intra tribal synergies among the tribal groupings. This according to him can help alleviate some of the numerous chieftaincy and land related disputes in Ghana.
The contractor working on the first lot of the147.5 km Fufulso-Damongo-Sawla road in the western part of the northern region is having it tough with owners of temporal structures along the main street of Damongo.
The Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations is to pilot a project to reduce rural poverty and strengthen livelihoods in 18 communities in the West Gonja District of the Northern Region.
A project to encourage residents of five districts in the Northern Region to patronise the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and annual sessions of the Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI) has taken off.
