Savelugu/Nanton Municipal was carved out of the then Western Dagomba District Council which comprised Tamale, Tolon and Savelugu. The district shares boundaries with Tolon/Kumbugu District to the west, Tamale Municipalty to the south and Yendi Ditrict to the south-east.
