Mion District with its capital Sang was carved from Yendi and forms part of the new districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012. The President H.E. J.E.A Mills, by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 46 new Districts. All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216. The district shares boundaries with yendi municipal to the East, Karaga district to the north, East Gonja to the south and Tamale metropolitan to the west
Dr Ahmed Alhassan Yakubu, the Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture, has supported the Mion District Health Centre, with two tricycle ambulances and some motorbikes valued at GH¢ 50,000 to help transport pregnant women to the health centre for safe delivery.
Ahead of the September deadline directive by President Mahama for the completion of the national street naming and Property Numbering Policy this year, the Mion District Assembly has finished execution of the exercise in its enclave.
The Regional Advisory and Information Network Systems (RAINS), a Tamale-based Non Governmental Organization (NGO), has handed over a two-unit classroom block to the chiefs and people of Sang in the Mion District.
