The Agona West Municipal can be found in the eastern portion of the Central Region. It has a total land area of 540-sq. km. and a population of 160,000. The municipality is divided into eleven zones. It lies within latitudes 5 30’ and 5 50N and longitudes 0 3.5’ and 0 55W.
The area is bounded to the East and West by Effutu Municipal and Asikum/Odoben/Brakwa Districts respectively. The municipal shares a border to the northeast with Akim West Municipal, to the northwest with Brim-South District and to the South, with Gomoa District.
Agona Swedru is the capital and has a population of about 40,000. It lies to the north of Winneba and is about 40 km. Off the main Accra-Takoradi Highway. The location of the township makes it the commercial center or the region and a nodal point from which roads radiate to the rich cocoa growing countryside of the Region. Has a total land area of 667 square kilometres.
The Member of Parliament for Agona West Constituency in the Central Region, Hon. Charles Obeng-Inkoom has distributed dual and mono desks to some public and private basic schools to complement effort made to improve education in the area.
The Headmaster of Agona Swedru National Vocational Training School,Mr Bernard Banaza, has indicated that payment of subsidies to vocational institutions has ceased four years ago, thus pleaded to government to reconsider meeting this provision again.
The Agona Swedru Municipal Government Hospital recorded 17,863 malaria cases in 2012 as against 15,016 in 2011, Dr Nii Adjei Adjetey, Agona West Municipal Director of Health Services, has said.
580 laptop computers have been distributed to some selected schools in the Agona West Municipality in the Central Region to help improve the teaching and learning of Information Communication Technology (ICT) in the area.
