Ekumfi District with its Administrative capital Essarkyir was carved from Mfantseman and forms part of the new districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012. The President H.E. J.E.A Mills, by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 46 new Districts. All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216. The District forms part of twenty (20) Metropolitan, Municipalities and Districts in the Central Region of Ghana. The District shares boundaries with Mfantiman Municipal to the East, to the North with Abura-Asebu Kwamankese , to the West with Cape Coast Metropolitan and to the South with the Gulf of Guinea.
The newly constructed community Senior High School at Ekumfi Otuam in the Central Region would be named after the late President Professor John Evans Atta Mills, Deputy Minister of Local Government ad Rural Development, Nii Lamptey Vanderpuye has disclosed.
The Ekumfi District Assembly in the Central Region has completed works on 5 institutional latrines for selected schools in the district. They are Edumafa, Suprudo, Dunkwa/Abontsin, Narkwa, and Etsibeedu.
A rest stop at Eyisam in the Ekumfi District in the Central Region which is jointly financed by the Central Region Development Commission and the Ekumfi District Assembly is yet to be completed after several years.
The District Chief Executive of Ekumfi District in the Central Region, Mr. I. K. Dawson has advised residents in the area especially landlords and would-be landlords to make provision of toilet facilities an integral part of their building plans.
