Sekyere Afram Plains District with its capital Drobonso was carved from Sekyere Afram Plains and forms part of the new districts and municipalities created in the year 2012 and were inaugurated at their various locations simultaneously on the 28th June, 2012.
The President H.E. J.E.A Mills, by an Executive Instrument (E.I) created 46 new Districts.
All the inaugurated and confirmed MMDAs established are operational with immediate effect hence bringing the total number of MMDAs to 216.
These new creations arose as a result of the large size of some of the then 170 MMDAs which was not one way or the other allowing the government to fully implement its policies of local governance to the benefit of the entire citizenary.

The Sekyere Afram Plains District of the Ashanti Region, has once chalked another milestone in its quest to ensure socio-economic development and improve the lives of residents in the newly created district, after receiving assistance from Norway.
A sod cutting ceremony has been performed by the Ashanti Regional Minister Samuel Sarpong to signal the commencement of construction of information and communication technology centre at Drobonso in the Sekyere Afram Plains district in the Ashanti Region.
The Drobonso community in the Sekyere Afram Plains District has been connected to the national grid. The extension of power to the community forms part of the rural electrification project to extend power to all communities in the country.
