The Asante Akim South District is one of the 27 districts in the Ashanti Region. The district was carved out of the old Asante Akim District Council in pursuance of the Government’s decentralization and local government reform policy. It was inaugurated in January, 1998 and Juaso made the district capital. Situated on the eastern part of the region, it is the main gateway to Eastern and Greater Accra regions.
Its eastern border forms part of the regional boundary dividing the Ashanti and Eastern Regions. The District also shares common boundaries on the North and North-West with Asante Akim North Municipal and Kwahu South District on the West. On the South-West lies Bekwai Municipal and on the South-East is Birim North District in the Eastern Region.
The total surface area of the district is about 1217.7km² (472.4 sq miles) and it forms about five per cent (5%) of the total area of the Ashanti Region, and 0.5 per cent of the total area of the country.
