NCCE holds Social Audit forum at Jumapo
The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) organized what it calls the Social Auditing Engagement at Jumapo in Koforidua for the people of New Juaben North in the Eastern Region.

The forum, which was held on the theme: “Citizens for Transparency” forms part of an Anti-Corruption, Rule of Law and Accountability Programme (ARAP) being run by the commission with support from the European Union (EU).

Speaking at the forum, the Municipal Director of NCCE, Mr Francis Cobbah explained that, the engagement was to dialogue with stakeholders at the local level and ways to promote ownership of development projects, as well as increase awareness of the activities in the Municipality.

He added that, it was also to ascertain the views of residents on major problems affecting them in the Municipality and how best they could be solved.

The Municipal Chief Executive for the new Juaben North Municipal Assembly, madam Comfort Asante thanked the Jumapoman and NCCE for inviting her to most of their programmes.

Concerns raised

Some residents of Oyoko expressed concerns about increase in the behavior of indiscriminate of open deification in communities in the municipality and appealed to the New Juaben North Municipal Assembly to provide them with toilet facilities and clamp down on the perpetrators.

They said, the act had become a major threat to the health and human safety in their communities.

Market for business was the next suggestion raised by the people, they said they need market center to ply their trade and sell their farm produce as one needs to move to Koforidua or Jumapo to trade.

The people also raised sanitation issues, poor road network, and acute water shortage; they said they don’t have a designated dumping site so people dump refuse indiscriminately making the whole community stink.

Response

Reacting to the concerns raised by the residence, the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben North, Mad. Comfort Asante, said the Assembly was tackling the problem.

She said the Assembly was working assiduously to get toilet facility for every community in the municipality. “Please we want you people to volunteer information when the need arises so that we can deal with these people who want to make the place unpleasant in the municipality,” she urged.

The MCE acknowledged their concern about the market place and promised to make it her most priority.

Madam Comfort Asante added that, she will refer the sanitation issues to the Municipal Environmental Health Officer to locate appropriate site to dump refuse generated, send request to the Works Department to grade access roads within the community, construct and repair broken bridges.
