Akrofuom Local Management Committee inaugurated
An eight-member Local Management Committee has been inaugurated by the Mineral Commission Board at Obuasi.

The Local Management Board among others will initiate projects and policies that would promote socio-economic development in communities where minerals are mined in the district.

Inaugurating the committee the Member of Parliament for Akrofuom Constituency, Kwabena Appiah Pinkrah charged the committee members to be diligent in the discharge of their duties and ensure that the funds are used appropriately.

He said the committee has a mandate which expects them to be honest, trustworthy, accountable, and very much professional and he is very optimistic that the caliber of the people who form the committee are people of high repute and will not disappoint.

He added that if the people see that they are working in their interest, they will applaud them and give them all the necessary support to make their work a success.



The chairperson of the Mining Development Fund, Madam Esther H. Edjeani also congratulated the members on their appointment and urged them to do their best to repay the confidence reposed on them by their appointees.

She warned that the funds are not to be used for money-making or to be used to support anniversaries of churches, schools, organisations, political parties or individuals or for their self-aggrandizement but rather to serve the communities that minerals are mined.

She revealed that the objective of the scheme is to facilitate the social-economic development of communities which mining activities are undertaken and that are affected by mining operations. It is also to provide financial resources for the direct benefit of mining communities, tradition, and local authorities.

The chairman of the occasion, Nana Appiah Kubi, the Odikro of Nyamebekyere also entreated the committee to first do a needs assessment of all the communities minerals are mined in order to find out what the people really need before executing them.



He added that in so doing, the right needs of the people will be addressed and it will be of importance to them.

Nana Appiah Kubi also appealed to the management of the Fund to release funds timely to enable the committee to perform its functions effectively. He said the timely release of funds will not make the LMC a white elephant but rather a useful committee in the district.

The committee members include Nana Asare Bediako (chairman), Hon Maurice Jonas Woode (DCE), Mr. Ernest Okyere Eyeson, Nana Abu Bonsra, Nana Appiah Kubi, Mr. Clement Azomahe, Madam Faustina Boakye and Mr Emmanuel Baidoo.
Seed money of Five thousand Ghana cedis (GH?500,000.00) for the committee was presented to the chairman on behalf of the committee.

Present at the function included, Hon. Patrick Boakye-Yiadom, Member of Parliament for Obuasi East Constituency, Hon. Faustina Amissah DCE for Obuasi East, and others.
