MoFAD signs social contract with fishermen, commissions landing site
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development has signed a social contract with the fisherfolks of the Volta Marine in a quest to buy in their commitment in adhering to the closed fishing season regulation.

The Minister of Fisheries, Madam Elizabeth Afoley Quaye addressing the media said the Fishing industry which is a major contributor to the country’s economy employing directly and along its value chain, estimated 10% of the country’s population is fast losing its economic value and must be protected.

It is in view of restoring the country’s depleted fishing stock that the MoFAD in consultation with the fisherfolks agreed to explore the closed season programme as one of many measures being adopted to give life back to the industry.



She urged them to strictly to adhere to the regulation for the one month period after which they are hopeful they would be able to reap the benefit of the practice.

The Minister also commissioned a landing site facility which should facilitate the work of the fishermen in storing and selling their catch. The facility comes along with two market sheds and an area for smoking the fish.



Madam Afoley Quaye entreated the community to handle the facility with care and to make the best out of it.

She also took the opportunity to announce a close fishing season for inshore fishers from May 15 to June 15, 2019.
