AMA, IOM outdoor newly renovated basketball court at Jamestown

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the Delegation of the European Union to Ghana, Sports for Education and Economic Development (SEED) Project and DUNK Grassroots, has opened the newly renovated basketball court at the Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA) in Jamestown.

The renovation of the facility forms part of a project titled “Playground” that was established to empower the youth to create viable alternatives to irregular migration.

Chief Executive of the AMA in an address said the primary focus and vision of the AMA is to drive the city to become liveable and more resilient whilst recognizing the informal and low-income communities dotted around the city and the need to provide an ambience for development in the communities.

"It is our quest to secure all open spaces and use those spaces as an alternative location for the development of the community. Today the Bukom Square has been transformed into a modern Astroturf stadium and people are playing football morning, afternoon, and evening," he said.

The AMA boss who described the newly renovated basketball court as colourful commended the SEED Project and IOM for the initiative and assured that the Assembly would continue to work closely with the IOM on issues of migration.

He announced plans by the Assembly to rehabilitate the community centre into a multipurpose one to serve the entire community.

He pointed out that as a result of urbanization there was pressure on all infrastructure and social services in the city hence the need to invest to stand the pressures associated with migration.

He said the AMA was working closely with the IOM to properly integrate migrants into the society.

Ms Abibatou Wane-Fall, Chief of Mission, IOM Ghana, in a remark said Accra was one of three cities that piloted the Migration Governance Indicators (MGI) which helps cities assess their migration governance structures.

She said the purpose of the Playground Project was to work together with partners to empower the youth to make well-informed migration choices.

"Through programmes such as todays, we want to contribute to providing opportunities for the youth...Through programmes such as todays, we want to contribute to providing opportunities for the youth," she said.

“Playground has the youth and community at its heart. We work with our partners to inform about safe migration options as well as the dangers of irregular migration,” said Abibatou Wane-Fall, Chief of Mission IOM Ghana.

“Together, we bring the vision of open and inclusive space to life – a space for girls and boys, young women and young men, from all walks of lives and backgrounds, migrants, returnees, neighbours, and locals. Everyone is invited to play and learn and grow together," she added.

The Playground Project is a partnership through the EU-IOM Joint Initiative for Migrant Protection and Reintegration, funded by the European Union Emergency Trust Fund for Africa.

Mr Nii Teiko Tagoe (Project Director, Ga Mashie Development Agency (GAMADA), assured that the facility would be put to good use to nurture talents in the community.
