‘Give us back our University’ – Yilo residents cry out

The entire streets of Yilo Krobo in the Eastern Region was painted red today, after a group calling itself United Krobo Foundation, staged a massive demonstration to protest against government's decision to relocate the main campus of the University of Environment and Sustainable Development from Yilo Krobo to Bunsu, in Akyem Abuakwa.

The decision, according to the group, is a deliberate attempt by the government to discredit and write-off the people of Krobo and Dangme from any major developmental projects that is geared towards improving the lives of the people.

The group also singled out Lawyer Samuel Ata-Kyea, a key figure in the Akufo-Addo led-administration for being the architect of the entire relocation agenda.

Lawyer Ata-Kyea, who is currently serving as the Minister for Works and Housing, is recorded to have proposed the relocation of the University prior to the 2016 general elections, utterances the group believe may have led the President to move the campus to his own backyard.

Felix Tamatey, a member of the group, told Ghanadistricts.com that, its leadership has already issued a twelve-day ultimatum to the government to rescind its decision or face their wrath.

Another resident, Patience Tettey also in an interview criticized the Akufo-Addo government for playing politics with Ghana's education. He appealed to the President to consider their petition and act on it accordingly.

The angry demonstrators were wielding placards with inscriptions such as "Ata Kyea said it in 2016", "we have advised ourselves", Krobos are Ghanaians; NPP stop tribal politics and Akyem Robbery, Respect Act 898” among others.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ebenezer Tetteh Kupualor, the Municipal Chief Executive of Yilo Krobo Municipality, who received the petition from the group on behalf of the government, called for peace especially amongst the youth in the area.

He pledged to forward the petition to the appropriate authorities for swift response.
