Suhum artisans attend workshop

About 180 artisan leaders in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region, on Monday attended a workshop with a goal to enhance the livelihood and income of the rural poor and micro and small enterprises.

The three-day sensitization programme, discussed the creation of a spacious and modern industrial zone for 620 artisans, who are basically mechanics, wood workers, spare part dealers and chain saw operators.

All the artisans are members of the Ghana National Association of Garages, Suhum branch, which has Mr. Isaac Awuku Asare as the Administrator.

The workshop was sponsored by BUSAC Fund and supported by DANIDA and USAID. It was aimed at increasing membership of rural micro and small enterprises that generate wealth, growth and employment opportunities.

Briefing the participants, Mr. F. Kwabi, Municipal Chief Executive, who was conducting a team from the Phi-Bita Stigma Fraternity, America, round some projects in the municipality, said he was working hard to give Suhum and its environs a face-lift.

The MCE introduced members of the œFraternity as friends of the municipality, who were there to explore avenues of assisting the municipal assembly in its quest to provide modern social amenities to help improve the living conditions of the people.

He mentioned training programmes for the artisans, which he noted, were specifically designed to equip them with relevant knowledge, skills and attitudes to improve performance and ensure their positive contribution towards the achievement of improved productivity at their workplaces in particular and the Ghanaian economy at large.

The Suhum Municipal Assembly has acquired large hectares of land at Okorase near Suhum, to help group all artisans in the municipality. The first phase involved the grading of the land, construction of lanes and installation of electricity.

It was attended by Heads of Departments and chiefs and was chaired by Mrs. Cynthia Adu-Boafo, who appealed to members of the local garages to register their businesses.
