ASUOGYAMAN: DCE attends role model conference for JHS girls
Samuel Kwame Agyekum, District Chief Executive of Asuogyaman District has advised girls to listen and be obedient to their parents so that their parents can inculcate the best practices of life in them.

He reminded them that while parents, teachers and government strive to prepare them for a better future, they also have a significant role to play to make achieve success in life.

The DCE gave the advice at the role model conference for JSH 3 girls in the district at Akosombo on the the theme: “I Know My Goal’’. It was organised by the District Education Office to guide and empower the JHS 3 girls in Asuogyaman District to set specific goals and to make conscious effort to achieve them.

He said as part of his and the government’s commitment to better education in Asuogyaman District a new JHS school is being constructed at Tortibo.

Rev. Sister Margaret Mary Woedi, a Pharmacist at St Martin Deporres Catholic Hospital Agormanya called on the girls to be responsible children and not to disappoint their parents.

She encouraged them to set goals and in setting the goals be mindful of where they are, where they want to go and how they want to get there.

She further advised them to identify their potentials and work tirelessly in order to achieve them, urging them to desist from watching too many telenovelas as it distracts them from their education. She also urged them to take good care of themselves as they grow and become attractive to the opposite sex, not to get pregnant and always put God first in their endeavours and they will succeed.

Superintendent Michael Happy Addae, Divisional Crime Officer, Akosombo Division, Ghana Police Service, in his opening remarks as the 2nd speaker quoted Dr Kwegyir Aggrey by saying “If you educate a man you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman you educate a nation” linking it to the important role women play in building the nation.

The Superintendent urged the girls to respect the elderly and dress decently and not wear shorts skirts that expose their thighs and breast.

He further advised the girls to watch the kind of friends they associate themselves with, as some friends could have bad influence on them which will in turn affect their educational accomplishments.

The Superintendent impressed upon the girls to take their studies serious and reminded them of the theme for the conference which was “I Know my goals” and to always have that in mind when pursuing their education.

In his closing remarks, Superintendent Michael Happy Addae advised the girls not to have their naked pictures posted on social media, be weary of kidnappers and be careful of the people they talk to.

He also urged the girls to have role models and emulate them in order to be successful with their education and life.

Dr Gloria Armah, Lecturer in the Maths Dept. University of Education Winneba said the key to successful life is the ability to make good use of “whatever you find yourself and also the ability to identify your potential”. She advised the girls set goals which are time bound and work hard to achieve them. She urged them to learn from successful persons, have positive mentally and find within themselves that they are the best people to be successful.

She urged the girls to concentrate on their education which will in turn help them earn higher salaries and avoid being pregnant in their teenage years.

Dr Armah, said the girls should not allow challenges set them back, avoid social vices, and never stop learning new things and to have the confidence in studying Maths as she is proof that women can be good in Maths.



Member of Parliament for Asuogyaman, Thomas Ampem Nyarko suggested to the District Education Office to plan and spread the conference over some days in order to gain the maximum attention from the girls as some of them were tired due to the length of time they had to sit down and listen to the speeches. He further suggested to the organisers to have smaller groups which will allow the girls to have closer interaction with the speakers and other resource persons.

The MP impressed upon the girls to have a role model and look up to them. He gave an example of how he decided to attend the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to further his education because his senior brother was then in the University.

He further gave an example of how he became the Student Representative Council (SRC) president of the University because the previous SRC president gave a speech which impressed him and then on he decided to do his best to be the SRC president.



Mr Darko urged the girls to believe in themselves and reminded them that they can be the best in terms of education because the best Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate in 2018 was a girl from a town called Tortibo in the Asuogyaman District.

The MP told the girls to believe in prayers and to identify themselves with a church in order to be good role models themselves. He pledged to provide one hot meal every day to support the girls writing the BECE this year and the support staff helping them.



He also said he will discuss with District Director of Education to support one camping activity this year and the subsequent years to come.
Senior Pastoral Officer at Right to Dream Academy Mrs Lydia Bequin asked the girls not make excuses for themselves but be determined to achieve their goals.



She further urged the girls to cultivate the habit of reading, grab opportunities and to make good use of them and be passionate about sports development.
