Mahama condemns ‘unacceptable attack’ on NDC supporters, calls for calm
Former President John Dramani Mahama has called for calm among supporters of the National Democratic Congress despite what he described as ‘unacceptable attack’ on them during yesterday’s Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election.

“It’s a sad day for our democracy, but I use the opportunity to continue to call for calm among supporters of the NDC despite the unacceptable attack on them”, he stated.

Mr Mahama yesterday called off his campaign tour of the Volta Region over violence that marred the Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election.


The decision was to enable him visit victims who sustained various injuries during the election. He is expected to continue his tour today, 1st February, 2019.


“I will be returning to the Volta Region later this morning to continue with my campaign, which had to be rescheduled to enable me visit and wish our injured colleagues well”, the former President said.

NPP Parliamentary candidate declared winner

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission of Ghana has declared New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Parliamentary candidate winner of Thursday’s by-election.


Mrs Lydia Seyram Alhassan obtained 12,030 votes representing 68.95% to beat her opponent Mr. Delali Kwasi Brempong of the NDC, who managed only 5,299 votes representing 30.37%.

NDC pulls out of By-elections

The NDC party on Thursday pulled out of the Ayawaso West Wuogon By-election citing shooting incident at Bawalashie, the party's strong hold as its main reason.


Some supporters of the opposition were reportedly rushed to the Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds.

Police restores Calm in Ayawaso West Wuogon

The Police Service in a statement yesterday said it has restored calm to the area, adding that the six injured persons are currently receiving treatment at the Legon and 37 millitary Hospitals.


The statement further added that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr David Asante Apeatu has directed the Director-General/Criminal Investigation Department to speed up investigation into the incidents of shooting and violence that marred the yesterday's elections.

Residents have rather been asked to go about their daily duties freely without fear as more police personnel have been deployed to the area to ensure and maintain law and order.
