Various participants at a three day sub-national consultation programme on the Child and Family Welfare Policy (CFWP), in the Kwabre East District have welcomed the policy as what is needed to solve the numerous challenges that confront the family today.

The family according to the participants is the basic unit of the society, since it plays vital functions in the development of societies and all other institutions within the society also look up to it for their development.

The policy, a brain child of the Ministry of Gender, children and social protection is to ensure the welfare and well being of children and families by supporting and promoting family and community strategies and processes.  It is also to ensure that services are available for children and their families when they face difficulties.

Addressing the workshop, the Ashanti Regional Director for Social Welfare, Mr. Jacob Achulo, assured the public that government recognizes the role that the family plays in national development as the bed rock of the society thus the need to strengthen it with special reference to the child.

He added that the CFWP has three main focus areas which are family related challenges, child maltreatment, and behavior challenges.  This he said if addressed adequately would empower both families and community to deal with such situations.

The policy will also recognize the role of the family, community and traditional leaders in making life enjoyable for all.

The workshop was organized at Mamponteng, Adanwomase and WadieAdwumakase to solicit the views of the general public on the proposed CFWP.

In a speech read on his behalf by the District Coordinating Director, the District Chief Executive, Mr. Adams Iddisah acknowledged the contribution of the family and the many challenges they face.  He acknowledged that the policy has become necessary because there is no clear national policy framework for child and family welfare services in Ghana.

He also acknowledged the various challenges that confront the departments concerned with the protection and promotion of child and family welfare in the district and assured the gathering that the Assembly would continue to assist them in all their endeavours. He added that the Social Welfare Department and CHRAJ recorded 113 and 116 cases respectively of which non-maintenance of the family cases remained the highest representing 50.22% due to family breakdown, lack of parental responsibility which has significantly affected the welfare of children.

Mr. Iddisah added that the implementation of the CFWP will help to streamline the issues in family set- up and protect the welfare of the child in the family as well as achieving the Millennium Development Goals II, III, IV and V, which is geared towards improving the quality of life of child and the family.

Participants agreed on the numerous proposals and made useful contributions to its success with special attention on its implementation.
