Former Municipal Chief Executive of Lower West Akyem municipality in the Eastern region, Kwabena Sintim Aboagye, says he would not refund an amount of GHC 2,836 which was spent on him by the assembly during an official trip to Sweden.

He has accordingly asked the authorities concerned to take the matter to court for appropriate redress as he is not ready to repay expenses endorsed by the assembly for a business trip that was supposed to help tackle sanitation problems in the municipality.

Speaking in an interview, Mr. Sintim Aboagye indicated that the amount was approved and paid to him by the assembly as his travel expenses to the Scandinavian country to bring an investor to clear the ever in increasing  filth in the area, and to recycle refuse and human excreta into manure for agricultural production.

According to him, the issue of refund cropped up after the new assembly under the current government called for a retrospective approval of the money, having already decided to abandon the project and institute a forensic inspection on the programme, which is currently being explored by other assemblies including the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

He indicated that the project was supposed to take off with an initial amount of 1.5 million dollars and operated on Build Operate and Transfer basis after a memorandum of Understanding had been signed between the Lower West Akyem municipal and the investor.

The issue of refund of the GHC 2.836 has since been extensively circulated in the media, prompting Mr. Sintim-Aboagye to cry foul.

He suspects that its an orchestrated attempt by the current administration to find wrong doing with former government appointees.
