The Nkoranza North District Public Health Nurse, Mrs. Eva Agbodo Saku has urged traditional birth attendants to encourage pregnant women to give birth at health facilities to save themselves from complications.

She warned pregnant women against visiting shrines during labour because "fetish priests and priestesses lack the requisite skills and knowledge to help them to give birth safely".

Mrs. Saku gave the advice when she addressed more than 30 health workers at a meeting to record the number of supervised deliveries within the third quarter of the year from the five sub-districts.

She expressed concern about how some birth attendants and herbal practitioners detained  women in labour and only rush them to health facilities after their conditions become critical.

"This negative practice has caused a number of deaths and should be discouraged," Mrs. Saku said and advised the attendants to refer cases beyond their competence early to health centers.

She urged nurses heading health centers to monitor and supervise the activities of traditional birth attendants and advised pregnant women to eat more fruits and lead healthy lifestyles.

Mrs. Saku noted that family planning services were not being patronized in the district and called on the youth to seek counselling at health facilities to avoid unwanted pregnancies.
