Akuapim South Municipal Assembly Holds 2021 Second General Assembly Meeting
The second ordinary meeting of the 2nd session of the 4th general assembly was held on 29th July, 2021, at the Assembly Hall, Aburi. The meeting was graced by Hon. Frank Aidoo, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Michael Ahwireng, the Presiding Member, Madam Lydia Akueteh, District Coordinating Director (MCD). Present were the Assembly Members, the various heads of departments and agencies, the media and some town folks.

The MCE as obliged by law per the Local Governance Act (Act 936, 2016) addressed the house on issues that have emerged in the Assembly since the last Assembly meeting and also present the Executive Committee’s report. In delivering his speech, the MCE expressed his thanks to God for His protection and guidance which made it possible for the meeting.

The Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) held a meeting in the second quarter, it was brought to bear that the municipality has been peaceful despite pockets of stealing, assault, four (4) armed robbery cases and seven (7) fatal road traffic accidents recorded in the period. Also, land related cases have also been noted to be on the increase and the Command is trying its utmost best to investigate and address all these issues. He encouraged all to be on the alert on activities of strangers in the various communities and also quickly report any person loitering aimlessly or exhibiting a suspicious character to the police for investigation since it has been observed that perpetrators usually connive with indigenes in committing these crimes. The MCE also stated the MUSEC is contemplating on spearheading an appeal for funds program to solicit for support from both benevolent individuals and organizations. He entreated the house to disseminate to their electorates to take all fire safety precautions very serious following resent fire outbreaks recorded in the country.

He highlighted the various projects and their various stages to the house. These projects include construction of the municipal court, construction of CHPs compound and classrooms, surfacing and reshaping of roads, construction of Disability Centre and the construction of greenhouse irrigation systems. The Pokrom market project has been completed and would be commissioned soon.

In Agric, the MCE indicated that on Friday, 9th July, 2021, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, the Minister for Food and Agriculture, as part of his working visit to the Eastern Region visited the municipality. He visited some farms and also took the opportunity to interact with members of farm based organizations to discuss their challenges and devise a way forward for improved performance. Besides, the Assembly took delivery of a total of 34,000 coconut seedlings in three batches and distribute to 40 farmers as part of the Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program. He stated that there will be another batch for assembly member and staff who are interested in cultivating them.

In education, he relayed the information that a total of 180 dual desks were received and had subsequently been distributed to some selected basic schools, as part of the government’s efforts to improving upon teaching and learning in schools in the country, to the house. He hinted that the 2020 B.E.C.E. results was a decrease to that of the 2019 results, thus, 71.7% and 75.8% with these percentages depicting the results respectively. He expressed his dissatisfaction of the results and admonished all to up to task to help these schools who underperformed which resulted in the above. Also, the Akuapim Vocational Training Institute has eleven (11) total numbers of students. Authority has plans to introduced week-end classes for special people with effect from September of the first term of the 2021/2022 academic year.

Besides, the assembly collaborated with the Ghana Highway Authority to train five (5) traffic wardens in some busy towns in the municipality for the purpose of assist school children cross the highway to and from school.

On Health, Hon. Frank Aidoo entreated all to be extremely careful as the third wave of the deadly Covid 19, the new delta variant, has been recorded in the municipality. A total number of 2316 made up of 2130 females and 186 males food and drink venders operating within the municipality were medically screened and certified.

LEAP payment was made in connection with the 71st and 72nd cycle within the second quarter to a total of 522 households in 26 communities. As part of measure to streamline the process in the application for the fund by prospective applicants, the officers of the Social Welfare and Community Development Department have been assigned to design a form for the assembly members to authenticate to show that applicant requesting for assistance live in their electoral area.

On other matters, the MCE announced to the house that the Municipal Assembly was ranked first in terms of performance among Municipalities/Districts in the Eastern Region after a monitoring exercise undertaken by the key officers of the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council which covered activities from 1st January to 31st December, 2020.

In conclusion, reports on the executive committee were read, questions, answers and clarifications were also given where necessary. The Presiding Member gave his closing remarks and the meeting came to an end.
