Asutifi South District donates to persons with disabilities

The Asutifi south district assembly in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana has presented assorted items to persons with disabilities in the district.

The items were donated to the sight impaired, speech impaired, hearing impaired, the crippled, those with amputated arms and legs, others with autism etc. from all the communities within the district converged at Hwediem to receive their items.

Presenting the items to the beneficiaries, the district chief executive officer for Asutifi South, Robert Dwomoh Mensah thanked the officers of the department of social welfare in the district for a thorough needs assessment in all the communities to know the needs of each person.

He said the olden days when the monies were given to the persons with disabilities in hand, you will realize that after few weeks, the amount is spent without any investment. " the NPP government led by Nana Akufo Addo through the administrator of the district assemblies common Fund decided to buy them items to invest to keep them busy and in business. This is to drive them out from the streets begging for alms in the rains and the scorching sun." he said.

"They are also to own a bank account for the business ventures to save for the future and also to sustain the venture " he added.

Mr Dwomoh said seventy persons with disabilities were selected from across the Asutifi south district by the department of social welfare and according to the choice of items from the beneficiaries. He said this act will be replicated in every quarter to be able to put each and every person with disability in the district in business. Others are also being rolled on the livelihood empowerment against poverty (LEAP) program.

He later said this move is one of the social and sustainable interventions of the NPP government to bridge the wide gap between the rich and the poor in society and congratulated the seventy beneficiaries and charged them to put the items to good use and to always maintain them.

The items ranges from tricycles, deep freezers, corn milling machinery, information center equipment, wax print, charcoal, mobile phones and accessories ,soap production items, water pumping machines, groceries.

Others are electric sowing machines, engine oils, food vendors items, wheelchairs, provisions, beddings and toiletries among others.

The Dabehene of Hwediem traditional council, Barimah Kofii Bonsu,Who represented the Omanhene of the Ahafo Hwediem traditional council, paid a glowing tribute to the president of the republic of Ghana for such intervention to take the persons with disabilities out of the streets and churches and mosques begging for alms.

Nana Bonsu admonished his people who received the items to save for the future and development of the venture and also to ensure the maintenance culture.

The president of persons with disabilities in the Asutifi south district, Alhasan Dauda Ibrahim was full of praise to God and the Asutifi south district assembly for putting smiles and hope in members of his association.

He promised to work together with the department of social welfare to do regular follow - ups on the beneficiaries to ensure the items are put together good use.
