We need professional accountants at our various Assemblies - Professor Oquaye

Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye has underscored the need to have professional Accountants in the various Assemblies across the country.

According to the Speaker it has been his long held view that accounting practices in the country is weak and approach to attaining results must be taken seriously.

Professor Mike Aaron Oquaye further noted that since the World Bank is interested in ensuring that monies that are committed to oversight are properly used.

He urged the World Bank delegation that had called on him to review funds given to the legislature for oversight role to turn their attention to the Assemblies and they would understand what he is talking about.

People who are managing the funds themselves do not have the professional capacity to perform and deliver, there for capacity building needs of such people should be seriously tacked, he said.

In addition we turn to query but this damage had already been caused, “I believe there are certain things that real professionals would not do.

“You would be surprise at people who call themselves accountants who are not, we have some who finish school as account officers, went to work in an office rose through the ranks to become senior accounting officers they call themselves accountants”, he lamented.
