Atiwa West District to construct wc public toilets in 29 communities

The District Chief Executive for Atiwa West District in the Eastern Region, Isaac Akomaning Asamoah has revealed plans of the district assembly to construct modern water closet public toilets in 29 communities across the length and breadth of the district to eradicate the poor state of existing public toilets in the district.

This revelations, which was contained in his sessional address delivered during the first ordinary meeting of the first session of the Atiwa West District Assembly held recently at the District Assembly hall complex disclosed that the Assembly is initiating these projects in partnership with Ghana First, a Non-Government Organization (NGO).

"The inadequate and poor state of the existing public toilets facilities in the district is source of worries to the Assembly considering the health implications it poses to members of the public.

To reverse the trend, the Assembly has entered into a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement with Ghana First, a Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) to construct modern public toilets (WC) in twenty-nine communities across the district" the address reads.

It continues to state that the Assembly under the arrangement is only supposed to provide the site for the construction work and the facilities would be powered by solar.

Isaac Akomaning Asamoah appealed to the Assembly members to whip the interest of their electorate to provide toilet facilities at their household level for their members to help minimise the pressure on public toilets.

The DCE who is concerned with the sanitation issues within the district draw the attention of the house to the two dumping sites in the district located at the Kwabeng Zone, saying "Hon. Presiding, based on the general sanitation inspection conducted in the district during August, it has been observed that the two dumping sites at Kwabeng Zone are hilly and needed to be evacuated and levelled up as a matter of urgency to avert any possible epidemic outbreak of sanitation related disease as the seasonal rains have set in. The Assembly has therefore written to X'tra Gold Mining Company Limited for their assistance in regards which they have concerted".

The DCE, who is only two months old in office after the splitting of the Atiwa District Assembly into Atiwa West District Assembly and Atiwa East District Assembly by the Local Government Ministry is yet to embark on a familiarization tour across the length and breadth of the district which he believes will provide him with the opportunity to communicate the Assembly's planed programmes and policies to the community members and in returns to learn their concerns and needs.
