MCE lauds achievement of planting for food and jobs initiative

The Ejisu Municipal Chief Executive, Beatrice Serwaa Derkyi has lauded the introduction of the Planting for Food and Jobs initiative, adding it has yielded significant benefit since its introduction.

According to her the result of the programme is that now food crops such as cassava, yellow and white maize, soya beans, plantain, cowpea, and yam are being exported to neighbouring countries such as Togo, Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.

This, she noted will go a long way to improve the income of farmers engaged in the programme and will transform their economic life.

The MCE, speaking at the Meet the Press series of the Assembly also briefed the gathering on some other significant developments of the government during the period.

She noted that the free SHS initiative, one of the government’s flagship programmes is meant to build the human capacity and give 30% placement of elite schools to children from deprived communities, and this has led to a number of people gaining access to secondary education.

This, the Ghana Education Service Director, Mrs. Achia Boateng confirmed, saying that due to the free SHS programme, there has been a 25% increase in enrolment of girls and 18% increase for boys’ intake.

Besides the Nation Builders Corps (NABCO) has also absorbed 100,000 graduates into the formal workforce.

The department for National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI)’s Director Mr. Eric Oti Nyarko stated during his turn that 190 returnees’ have been trained in various employable skills in the year, and 50 enable – youth trained to man the rice processing factory cited at Donaso under the one D, one F initiative whiles 90% of youth enrolled under the literacy programme have gained literacy after they were taken through the programme.
