MCE commissions Gh1.2m Abattoir in Bolgatanga

The Bolgatanga Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Joseph Atura Amiyuure has commissioned a new abattoir with a bio-digester for the conversion of waste materials into biogas.

The GHs 1.2 million facility, which started in July, 2017 is located at Yorogo, a suburb of Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region.

Apart from the equipment necessary for slaughtering and processing of the animals, the facility also has a pavilion and washrooms for the staff and workers.

The facility would be the new place for the butchers in the municipality and the region as a whole to slaughter animals and process their meat before taking them to the market for sale.

Mr Amiyuure said the facility would help ensure hygienic conditions for meat processing as it is being connected to regular supply of water and the animals would be examined and assessed by the veterinary officers before being allowed for slaughtered.

He told the butchers that although the abattoir is the property of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly, it was theirs to use and urged them to manage it well.

Mr Martin Ayire Amana, the Managing Director of M A Amana Construction Limited, the construction company that constructed the facility, said the facility has a kraal to house the animals until they are examined by veterinary officers before being slaughtered.

Mr Timothy Timbil, the Secretary of the Bolgatanga Butchers Association, expressed gratitude to the Municipal Assembly and government for putting up the new abattoir in the area.

He said the facility has come as a big relief to butchers as the old facility was not conducive for processing of good hygienic meat.

Until the construction and commissioning of this new modern abattoir, all the butchers in the Bolgatanga Municipal and other people from the neighbouring districts used to slaughter and process meat at an old dilapidated abattoir at the old Bolgatanga market.
