Techiman N: Assembly fails to elect PM after four attempts

The Techiman North District Assembly has failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM) to preside over the Assembly’s meetings after four attempts as voting was held on two different occasions by the Electoral commission.

None of the two contestants was able to obtain the two-thirds of the total votes cast votes as required at the 6th ordinary meeting of the Assembly held in the District capital, Tuobodom.

None of the two contesting candidates was able to secure 24 votes of the 36 Assembly Members as proscribed by law.

Mr Amegashie Julius, the incumbent PM polled 14 votes with his challenger, Mr. Kwame Adu having 21 votes after the first voting, which fell short of the 24 votes required.

In the second round, Mr. Amegashie Julius polled 13 votes while Mr. Kwame Adu maintained his first round figure of 21 with 1 rejected ballot.

The situation according to the District Chief executive of the Assembly Hon. Peter Mensah is worrying adding that the assembly would work towards getting a new PM at its next meeting.

Some of the Assembly members in a majority voting decision called for the postponement of the meeting with Hon. Amponsah Charles, Assembly member for Aworowa Amangoase suggesting that the inability to elect a PM has affected the house psychologically to discuss other matters.
