36 prosecuted under AMA anti-littering operations
Sanitation and Motor court at the La District sentenced Kwame Akyere to two months imprisonment for littering the Central Business District (CBD) of Accra.

Mr. Kwame Akyere was sentenced on his own plea due to his inability to pay three hundred and sixty (GHc 360.00) fine when he appeared before a court presided over by Her Lordship Juliet Dudoo last week together with some thirty-five (35) other persons for the same offence.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly’s Sanitation and Monitoring Task force arrested the accused persons, whiles it was patrolling the Central Business District (CBD).

They are Ebenezer Oduro, Kweku Bonsu, Nana Yaw Amoesi, Akua Afriyie, Maa Abena, Ramatu Abukari, Kennedy Klutse, Ibrahim Mutalah, Adam Mariam, Asamoah Justice, Kojo Gyan, Appiah Johnson, Ashia Abdullah, Christina Owusu, Ama Akyeme, Holy Opoku, Augustina Addai, Beauty Ayiyebu, Mohammed Ali, Jonathan Aiddo and Moro Ali.

The rest are Cynthia Fuseini, Ofori Adama Julie, Gifty Duku, Victoria Adeiaya, Ali Gyaa, Mary Mensah and William Eden.
Out of the number, eight traders were cautioned and discharged by the court whiles twenty-eight were given various fines ranging between fifteen and thirty penalty units.

Mr. Gilbert Nii Ankrah, head of Public Affairs at AMA in an interview noted that the prosecution forms part of efforts by the Assembly to make the city clean adding that before embarking on the operation the public and traders were cautioned, “To desist from dumping indiscriminately and since the Assembly was bent on enforcing its bye-laws hence the operation”.

He further pointed out that the AMA cleaning Bye-law, 2017 prohibits any person from throwing litter, refuse, or other matter into the gutters, drain or unauthorized places which may cause nuisance or block the free passage of running water and urged all to use the bin.

The Assembly task force would be on the lookout for such persons and ensure that the law takes its course to deter would be offenders.

And urged residents not to liter and desist from dumping into drains and unauthorized locations and resister with accredited waste service providers to collect their waste to ensure a clean city.
