World Vision launches 4-year WASH project in Asutifi North

World Vision International in Ghana (WVI-G), acting in collaboration with its local and foreign partners, has launched a four year Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) pilot project in the Asutifi North District of the Ahafo Region.

Under the project, WVI-G is partnering the Safe Water Network, the International Water and Sanitation Centre (IRC), both in Ghana, the Aquaya Institute and the Netcentric Campaigns, in USA, to provide sustainable safe water access to over 32,000 people within 56 selected communities.

It is receiving funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, in USA and would end in 2022.

Speaking at a durbar held at Kenyasi, to launch it, Mr. Robel Lambisso Wamisho, the Technical Programme Manager of WASH/WVI-G said the project, which has a total investment of about 3.5 million US Dollars, will provide boreholes, mechanized water systems and New Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) latrines, for beneficiary communities.

He said a total of 15 schools and 7 health facilities together with eight communities in the District, have been chosen for the first phase of the project.

The communities included; Yaa Beneagya, Abenaa Arko, Akwasi Antwi, Agyapon Krom, Baanu Yena, Kojokrom, among others.

Mr Wamisho said promoting improved sanitation and hygienic practices at homes and institutions in the District, as well as the provision of hand washing and waste disposal facilities, were the other components of the project.

He called for innovations from the government and stakeholders in order to enhance sustainability of WASH in the country.

Mr. Bobie Opoku Evans, the Ahafo Regional Minister commended the partners of the project for their kind support and pledged his support to ensure the success of the initiative and its replication to other Districts.

Representatives of the other partners, who attended the launch, took turns to advise the beneficiaries to ensure the sustainability of the facilities, for an uninterrupted water supply.

Nana Boakye Boateng Gyeabour, Ankobeahene of Kenyasi No.1 Traditional Area, commended the partners of the project and called for the need for citizenry to protect water bodies and also maintain a clean and hygienic environment.
