K NCHUMURU: Youth urged to take advantage of interventions in agriculture
The District Chief Executive of the Krachi Nchumuru District in the Volta, Augustine Appiah was full of praise to farmers, fisher folks and all those who in diverse ways contributed immensely to the growth of the Agricultural sector, particularly in feeding the people in the district and the country at large, saying their contributions.

The DCE indicated that government in line with its quest to modernize and improve agriculture production as a major sector to improve the economy of the country introduced a number of initiatives in the sector including the “Planting for Food and Jobs” of which the Krachi Nchumuru District is a beneficiary.

The District, he indicated, received a total of 9,120 bags of fertilizers for distribution to farmers in the District, while other seed inputs such as maize, rice and vegetables (Tomatoes and Pepper) were also distributed to farmers in the District.



In all, a total of 885 farmers benefited from the distribution of the fertilizers, with 167 females and 718 males benefiting. “The long effect of this intervention was an increase in acreage cultivated and subsequently increases in harvest”, he stated.

According to him, going by theme for the celebration: "Farming for Food and Jobs", while the interventions led to increased food production, the many hands that were engaged to assist in the application of these various inputs, resulted in job creation for the teeming youth.

He thus, urged the youth to take advantage of the various laudable initiatives and interventions by government to take up agriculture as a full time business to improve their economic lives.



He mentioned youth in agriculture programme, modernization of agriculture in Ghana, in which part funding was provided by the Canadian government to undertake a five-year project, which resulted in farmers in the District benefiting from capacity building on how best to ensure food security in the cultivation of cassava, yam, maize and rice among others. Additionally, technical officers in the District Agricultural Development Unit (DADU) also benefited immensely from the technical support under this initiative.



All these efforts by government were geared ultimately towards job creation for the youth especially, he added.
