MCE, operation vanguard fights galamsey in Kintampo

Mr. Michael Sarkodie Baffoe, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Kintampo North in the Brong Ahafo Region and the “Operation Vanguard” team is leaving no stone unturned to stop illegal mining activities popularly known as ‘Galamsey’ which is surfacing at New Longoro and its surrounding communities in the Municipality.

The Operation Vanguard upon a tip-off and report by the MCE, led by the Commander Lt. Owusu Sekyere successfully carried out an operation and seized various equipment used for the illegal activities. No arrest was made during the operation as the people had run away leaving their equipment. The Military however, set fire on the equipment.

In an exclusive interview with the MCE, he acknowledged that the fact that the mining activities of these men was illegal, there was negative implications of the hazardous chemicals on human health as well as marines’ species.

The affected communities of the illegal mining include New Longoro, Tainso, Babatokuma, Busuama, Bewele and Tefoboi, along the North bank of the Black Volta. He noted their activities was affecting Black Volta and farming land.

The MCE also said he constituted a watchdog committee comprising chiefs and other influential personalities who live in the affected communities to in the fight against the illegal mining activities in the area.
