The election of the presiding member became relevant following the end of tenure of the incumbent, Hon. Paul Desmond Tutu on the 15th of November, 2017.
The incumbent PM, Mr. Paul Desmond Tutu decided not to contest the position paving the way for four aspirants, Hon. Yaya Trawule, Hon. Osie Abraham, Hon. Peh Peter and Hon. Sie Charles to pick forms to contest when the Electoral Commission (EC) opened nominations.
After one round of voting, Hon. Yaya Trawule polled 13 votes, Hon. Osie Abraham had 14 votes, while Hon. Peh Peter secured 6 votes and Hon. Sie Charles got 5 votes. Since none of the contestants obtained the required votes, Hon. Sie Charles was ruled out.

Hon. Peh Peter then stepped down to allow for a two man contest between Hon. Yaya Trawule and Hon. Osie Abraham.
In the second round of voting, Hon. Osie Abraham polled 14 votes whilst Hon. Yaya Trawule obtained 24 votes. Both failed to obtain 27 votes as required votes to be duly elected. The house therefore postponed the election to a future date.
The DCE, in an interview, expressed disappointment at the turn of events and pledged the assembly would put in place all the necessary steps to ensure the successful election of a PM to steer the affairs of the assembly in due course.
