Akuofrom Assembly elects presiding member

A retired headmaster of Akrofuom Senior High and Technical School (ASHTS) at Akrofuom, Mr Peter Amponsah has been unanimously elected as the Presiding Member of the newly created Akrofuom District Assembly in the Ashanti Region.

Mr. Amponsah contested alone and polled 100% of the total votes cast having had all the 17 assembly members voting in his favour at the first ordinary meeting of the assembly, held at Akrofuom, the district capital.

The polls was officiated by the District Electoral Officer, Mr. Ebenezer Tettey Odonkor.

In his acceptance speech, Mr Amponsah thanked his fellow assembly members for the honour done him and assured them that he will work in harmony with them in order to achieve the goals they have set for their various electoral areas.

He recounted how he has tried on several occasions to serve in that capacity even when they were part of the Adansi South District, and getting the nod this time around he will prove to all and sundry that indeed he deserves the position.

Prior to the election, the District Chief Executive (DCE), Hon. Maurice Jonas Woode had thanked members for confirming his nomination for the position of the DCE and once again assured them of his willingness to work hard for the betterment of the district. He had also admonished the Assembly members not to consider their parochial interest in voting for the Presiding Member, but rather the competence of the candidate.

He also revealed that just as the President, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo Addo has stated that he is in a hurry to fulfill his promises to the people of Ghana, he is also in a hurry to bring development to the district and therefore, called for support from all stakeholders in the district.

Hon. Woode again appealed to the Assembly members to put up their best in an effort to see their electoral areas developed. He added that for the Assembly to meet the criteria for Functional Operation and Assessment Tool (FOAT), the house needed to attend sub-committee, executive and general meetings regularly and that members must brace themselves up for it.

He bemoaned the fact that the district has not taken advantage of many of the flagship programs of the government. He therefore urged the Assembly members to involve themselves in them especially the Acquaculture program.

Hon. Woode again revealed that the Assembly has received a total of 20 street bulbs from the Member of Parliament for the Akrofuom constituency, Hon. Kwabena Appiah Pinkrah to luminate the streets of Akrofuom.

He also added that the Assembly has priotised to put most of the roads in the district into good shape, hence the need to purchase a grader for the district and also two roads have been submitted to Accra as part of the prioty roads in the district to be fixed with cocoa funds.

In attendance were heads of decentralised departments in the Assembly.
