NANUMBA S: DCE, DCD joins education directorate in stock taking meeting

The District Chief Executive for the Nanumba South District, Mr. Natogmah Ibrahim Mukaila and the DCD were part of the termly stock taking meeting of the staff of the District Education Service and head teachers of basic schools across the District.

In her welcome address, the District Director of Education; Madam Margret Zaato could not hide her joy sitting on a high table in such a meeting of teachers with her recent subordinate officer as the DCE.

She saluted her lieutenants with all hands in the air for their cooperation and hard work to improve the fortunes of basic education in the District. In a much more superior measure, she pointed at the District Assembly as the chief architect of her achievements and in the Oliver Twist fashion, appealed to the DCE for more.

When he took his turn, the Hon. DCE retorted "I am here to interact with you as much as possible as a teacher and not a politician" on grounds of being a teacher by profession. He was full of thanks to the GES Director of the District and her able staff for boldly writing the name of the District among top performing Districts at the Basic Education Certificate Exam level.

He said that Government was not going to let out a brief of air in putting in much more resources and logistics with the ultimate aim of making quality education accessible to every Ghanaian child of school going age. This is the best and reliable investment for our children; he added.

However, he did not hold brief to mention laziness, apathy, absenteeism, arrogance, non-preparation of lesson notes and poor parenting on the part of some teachers, parents, officers and pupils as some challenging barriers that ought to be eliminated in our quest to achieve quality education.

He reminded the teachers about the Government recent huge investment in the sector in the form of the FSHS, the resurrection of the teacher trainee allowances and the increments in the capitation grants among others and appealed to them to help guard these interventions to the Promised Land.

Mr. Ibrahim Mukaila, was however, not pleased at all with the mystery surrounding the usual low performance of the Wulensi Senior High School and called on all stakeholders to be concerned about the situation so that together there can be a lasting solution to the problem.

Responding to some concerns raised by some of the teachers as in the following, the DCE with the support of his able DCD had these for their responses:

1. Whether or not it was not over due for the GES department to have its own directorate?

The Hon. DCE told the gathering that as far as he was aware, negotiations were very near completion with GETFUND to put up a modern structure for such purpose.

2. In an answer to a query concerning the establishment of a model girls school, the DCE in a joint answer said that the issue had almost reached maturity to the extent that the traditional department has released a 12 acre land to serve that purpose.

3. On the issue of expansion of the School Feeding program, the DCE said that it was a matter of policy and as soon as Government gives the greenlight, all applications in that regard would be duly attended to.

4. The unresolved matter had to do with the D/A providing adequate and qualitative furniture for schools in the District.

In this regard, the DCE was of the opinion that with the little funds available the D/ A cannot effectively handle the expansion of school blocks/ buildings alongside providing enough furniture and so there has to be a choice. This generated a form of endless debate on the subject.

Winding up to attend another function, the DCE informed the teachers his intention to visit the schools from time to time not for witch hunting but, to inspire and motivate them to give out the best in them to achieve effective quality education in the District and for the District.
