ASOKORE M: Health Director calls for more financial support for the health sector

The Asokore Mampong Municipal Health Director, Justice Ofori Amoah has assured residents in the municipality that the health directorate and for that matter health workers are poised to deliver quality health service to the people.

Speaking at the 2017 Annual Performance Review of the Asokore Mampong Health Directorate last Friday, Mr. Amoah admitted that though the year under review was full of challenges, the supports of all stakeholders and the DHMT ensured that they were able to stand the challenges, adding that what lies ahead is big but they are up to the task.

“The Municipal Health Directorate worked in 2017 with 7 sub-municipal and 34 functional CHPS zones with a population of about 3,55280 with a working force of 152 health care providers”, he indicated.

With regards to Integrated Disease Surveillance and Response (IDSR), the Director noted that the Health Directorate recorded two episodes of disease outbreaks; first being Meningitis on 31 March 2017 with 26 cases, 7 deaths with case fatality at 27%. The second was due to Influenza A, H1N1 on November 29 2017 with 96 cases, 4 deaths and 4.2% fatality rate.

He said the directorate adopted a number of measures to curb the situation including prompt case management and health education, mass drug administration, vaccination of entire Kumaca population and health care providers among others.

He also disclosed that maternal, child health and family planning rate increased from 3.6 to 6, antenatal care increased from 2.66 to 7.2. However same cannot be said for supervised delivery, which decreased from 13.8 to 10.5.

The Municipal Health Director also announced that they have applied for accreditation for 2 health facilities from the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIS).

He expressed the need for more financial support for the directorate to be able to meet a lot of its demands adding “there cannot be any effective and efficient health care delivery without financial support”.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Alidu Seidu who was at the function acknowledged the challenges confronting the health sector in the municipality including inadequate public health facilities, and personnel especially medical doctors, lack of medical laboratory among others; but has assured them of the assembly's continues support for the sector to enable them perform their mandated role in ensuring good health for all. "Let us at all times cooperate and collaborate in order to be able to effectively meet the needs of all those we are called to serve".

The MCE also announced the Assembly's plan to put up a hospital in the Municipality to save people from going to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and other health facilities outside the municipality.

Additionally, the Assembly intends to put up health centres or polyclinics in some communities beginning with Parkoso, stating that the tendering process will soon commence and the project awarded.

He commended the health workers in the municipality for their continual and relentless efforts in supporting the development of the municipality in spite of the challenges.

The MCE was presented with a citation by the health directorate for his commitment to improving healthcare within the municipality.
