According to him, for about one and a half years, their exemptions under the 1D1F are still in the process; and would so much appreciate it if it is expedited to bring the need relief to them in these difficult economic times.

The exemptions, he indicated is very important to their operations because they are doing value addition, where they convert the scraps which would have been exported in its raw form into useful products for domestic use and for export.

And that is the reason today iron rods in Ghana are cheaper than those in the neighbouring countries.

Speaking with the parliamentary press corps during an industrial visit to the factory, Mr. Mukesh Thakwani described as a wonderful initiative, the government’s 1 district 1factory (1d1f) policy aimed at industrializing the country.

He said the 1d1f policy without doubt is a step in the right direction as it would make the country self-sufficient through value addition.

He however advised that while government is trying to support local industries to meet the demands of the country through which more jobs would be created to absorb the teeming unemployed youth, it is important to protect these local industries from unnecessary external competition.

This, he noted could be achieved by banning importation of goods that are manufactured locally.

He said while B5 Plus which is a local company is a leading steel manufacturing Company capable of producing any steel with the highest standard and has been satisfying the Ghanaian market and the West African sub-region, cheap steels are still being imported or smuggled into the country which pose major challenge to their operations. He said together with other still companies in Ghana, the market is as good as satisfied.

He, however, expressed hope that with parliament back from break, he looks forward to hearing something positive from government.

He said with the support of government policies, they look forward to making Ghana self-sufficient and also meeting the needs of west-African sub-region. “We have the capability, we have everything".
