SONA 19: Govt constitutes panel to plan, implement election of MMDCEs

President Akufo-Addo says government has constituted a panel of experts to plan, cost, schedule, and implement a roadmap for the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) across the country.

The President, who stated this when delivering his State of the Nation Address in Parliament today, said that the election as promised by the NPP government is aimed at devolving more power into the Ghanaian people to choose their own leaders.

Touching on progress made so far, Mr Akufo-Addo noted that bill for the amendment of article 55(3) of the constitution has already been gazetted, to help pave way for the direct, popular election, on partisan basis of MMDCEs.

He was expectant that a Referendum will be held on the Bill, alongside the Unit Assembly and District level elections in 2019 to kick start the process.

He therefore, urged Ghanaians to ensure a repetition of the bi-partisan support that made it possible in the hugely successful outcomes in the referenda for the newly created regions.
