Fishers in Central Region receives 300 outboard motors
The Chief Executive officer of (CEO) of Coastal Development Authority (CODA), Mr Jerry Ahmed Shaib has presented 300 outboard motors to fishermen in the Central Region as part of measures to boost the fishing industry.

The CEO in his address stated that the presentation is part of the first batch of a total of 5,000 outboard motors procured to support fishers across the Coastal Development Zone with the collaboration of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MOFAD) under the leadership of the sector Minister, Elizabeth Afoley Quaye.

He applauded the Minister for the immense role she played in the procurement process funded under the Infrastructure for Poverty Eradication Programme (IPEP).

He emphasized that "under the support, the government is providing subsidies of 47.3 percent and 65 percent on the 40 and 15 horsepower outboard motors respectively".



Mr. Ahmed Shaib used the medium to outline constructing eleven (11) landing beaches and offering interest-free microcredit to the fishers as part of the government’s intervention to enhance fishing and empower the fishers.

On the part of the Regional Minister, Mr. Kwamena Duncan thanked the President for “hearing the cry” of fishers and swiftly coming to their aid with the subsidized outboard motors. He commended the CEO of CODA for his instrumental leadership in ensuring broad consultations with stakeholders in the fishing industry to ascertain the reality and also for standing firm with fishers throughout the process. He urged the fishers to show gratitude to the President for the huge subsidy.



In attendance were the Member of the Council of State, Obrempong Appiah Nuamah II, Omanhene of the Twifo Mampong Traditional Area, Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) of Assin Central, Mfantseman, Abura Asebu Kwamankese, Komenda Edina Eguafo Abirem, and Gomoa Central. Ekumfi, Cape Coast, Gomoa West and Awutu Senya including ably Chief fishers and members landing beach communities in the region.
