This decision was taken by the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Kusi following recurring floods in the New Juaben Municipality.

The Emergency Communal labour was expected to have taken place in all electoral areas in the Municipality. However, some areas were spotted not to have participated in the communal labour.

Upon inspection, the Disaster Committee Members including the Municipal Chief Executive noticed some challenges that residents encountered while desilting the gutters. Concrete slabs which were used to cover gutters made it difficult for gutters to be desilted entirely. Some cables which were buried in gutters also made it difficult for gutters to be desilted.

The Emergency Communal Labour was scheduled by the seven member Disaster Committee after floods submerged some areas in the municipality; took lives, rendered people homeless and destroyed properties. For three consecutive Sundays, specifically 11th September, 2016, 25th September, 2016 and 2nd October, 2016, the rains flooded most of the communities in the Municipality.

This moved the Committee to call for an emergency communal labour to help in curbing the flood situation in the Municipality.

Some of the areas inspected by the Committee include Debrakrom, Social Welfare, Oguaa, Kantudu, Asokore, Srodae and Juaben Serwaa Market.

However, the Committee Chairman, Mr Kwaku Okyere, has suggested the reconstruction of narrow gutters to enlarge them in order to create way for the free flow of water after downpours.
