The Nkoranza South District Assembly in the Brong Ahafo Region has set up an 11-member committee to address the challenges facing education in the area.

The District Chief Executive, Hon. Emmanuel Kwadwo Agyekum, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Nkoranza that members of the committee were experienced stakeholders in the sector who would also study problems facing teachers, students and parents.

He expressed concern about the poor performance of the district in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE), which had rendered a number of graduates of junior high schools incapable of pursuing senior high school education.

The education committee will study the analysis of the results from the schools to find out why some schools scored zero per cent in the BECE whilst others did better.

Nkoranza District scored 43 per cent in 2007, 46.7 per cent in 2008 and 52.2 per cent this year in the Examinations.

Hon. Agyekum disclosed that the committee would organise seasoned examiners to prepare test instruments for special mock examinations to prepare junior high school candidates in the district for the BECE.

The DCE gave the assurance that the District Assembly would sponsor the organization and conduct of the examinations, and asked parents to provide the basic needs and encouragement for their children in their academic work.

He warned school children to refrain from attending unproductive social activities and urged School Management Committees to help ensure effective checks on the attendance of school children at video shows, funerals, dances and concert shows.

Hon. Agyekum appealed to the Assembly members, unit committees, traditional and religious authorities to join the campaign towards the promotion of quality education in the district.

Meanwhile, teachers in the district have been advised to redouble their efforts to help improve the academic performance of students, with the assurance that the assembly would duly reward them for their invaluable contributions.
