According to the Executive Director of IDEG, there are some Ghanaians with the opinion that when governance at the local level is opened up to partisanship, “Political parties would burn the whole local government areas and system because of the nature of our politics as a country, such a negative tendency should not be supported, rather it would bring about development at the local level”.

Some have written article and argued that political parties are corrupt, “do you think President Akufo-Addo would make a decision that is going to make matters worse; he has the support of all the former Presidents who had governed for eight years and see that the challenges are in appointing MMDCEs”.

He was speaking on behalf of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), Center for Democratic Development (CDD) and IDEG at the launch of Regional and Diocesan sensitization programme of the National Catholic Secretariat, on the upcoming referendum in Accra.

“We should not tire the referendum to the elections of MMDCEs, political parties should ignored since we give them our mandate, how do they implement public policy to improve our living conditions in terms of health, education and sanitation at local level we should ask ourselves?”

Dr. Akwetey further pointed out that the interval between the December 17, 2019 referendum, when successful and the election of MMDCEs in2021 would be two years.
